This season, you’ll notice a small change to our pricing. Over the past year, the cost of caring for our horses, maintaining equipment, and keeping our rides safe and enjoyable has risen by over 20%. We’ve worked hard to absorb as much of this as possible, but to continue offering the high level of care our horses deserve and the memorable adventures you love, we’ve made some adjustments:

• Ride the Waves (2hrs): $220 per person – our signature summer adventure, the only horse swim experience in the region.

• Forestry Ride (2 hrs): $180 per person – explore scenic trails on our best-value mid-range ride.

• Bayview Scenic Ride (1 hr): $90 per person (group discounts available) – perfect for families and first-time riders.

We’re committed to keeping our rides small, personal, and unforgettable, with happy, healthy horses at the heart of everything we do.

We just wanted to notify everyone that from the 1st of April 2023 there will be a change to our pricing structure across our Ride the Waves and Forest and Hillside trek. Unfortunately a number of our costs have increased, and while we have attempted to absorb this through our busy summer period to keep activities cheap for you, this is no longer sustainable for us – our prices have increased too, including our farrier, feed, hay, rent, licensing and fuel costs. So from the 1st of April 2023 please see the pricing schedule below;

Forest and Hillside Trail 2023 Pricing: $150
Ride the Waves Experience 2023 Pricing: $180

We hope this tries to alleviate any confusion you may see in pricing sessions between the change taking affect from the 1st of April. The pricing of our Bayview scenic ride will remain unchanged so that we can continue to offer a great deal for families who are visiting the area and give you that extra helping hand. Don’t forget that group discounts may also be available for all rides on bookings made in advance for 6 or more people.

We are delighted to say that we can now re-offer our Forest & Hillside Trail again temporarily during the weekends only from the 19th of November. It will be a further couple of weeks before weekday bookings can resume as a result of continued logging operation.

Gosh – the incredible team at P F Olsen are doing an incredible job clearing the forestry next to us – while the view might be looking slightly different as outlined from our Webcam photo’s below (special feature including Tui and her lovely new 12 week old foal), they really are powering through the work to get us back in there as soon as possible.

Now that the tree’s close to the roadway have been felled disruption is now minimal and we are looking forward to hitting the ground running soon with our Forest & Hillside trail once more.

Original Post: 21st October 2022 – Forest & Hillside Trail Temporarily Unavailable

Unfortunately it’s that time of year once again where the logging of the Waitangi Endowment Forest begins! While during a normal harvest here at Horse Trek’n we are able to find alternative routes around the logging – sadly this year the section due for harvest is through the entrance way to the forest and alongside our main base area.

This sadly means we have had to adapt our service offering during this time and we will currently be unable to offer our Forest & Hillside trail during this time, as it would be unsafe to ride past logging machinery operators while they are felling tree’s. While harvest is weather dependent we are optimistic we will have our ride up and running again around the end of November ready for the busy summer season – all be it with a slightly different view along a small section of the forestry which has been logged. In the meantime, both our Bayview Scenic Ride and Ride the Waves experience are still available.

All lessons and learning is completed on a brand new 20x40m all-weather sand outdoor arena meaning you can ride with us all year round! We also have a relaxed and friendly team of happy schoolmaster horses who are here to assist with your learning – or alternatively you are more than welcome to bring your own horse. As well as learning how to ride, we will also focus on aspects of horsemanship so you can expect to learn about general horsecare and the other important aspects of horse ownership, so that you are ready and prepared one day to enjoy your own horse too!

We are now back open as normal with the change in alert levels back to level 1 where it is currently at the time of writing. During this time we are trying to be as flexible as possible with our future bookings, and as a result any future bookings that need to be cancelled or amended as a result of a change in alert levels, will be fully refunded on request, or if you would prefer we are happy to move the booking to an alternative future date.

Great news everyone! Under government guidelines our business will be able to re-open at the start of Covid Level 2 – from May 14th 2020. While we will be open, we will not be operating at a full capacity – and have extra safety measures in place that we will outline below:

• We ask that customers do not arrive more than 15 minutes ahead of ride departure to allow our staff to prepare rides with minimal external contact. We will brief all customers on arrival as to extra measures being taken on the day and instructions will be given to help protect both customers and staff from the spread of Covid-19.

Based on current government advice, we will be closed for at least the next 4 weeks as a result of sanctions regarding the current caronavirus outbreak.

We hope to be back as soon as time will allow, and will continue to answer inquiries while we are closed but via phone or email only.

Up here in the Bay of Islands we are fortunate to be placed in a subtropical climate, this means we experience much warmer temperatures all year around when compared with most of the the rest of New Zealand. The average temperature in the summer is a sunny 26°C (or 75°F) where as in winter the average is around 17°C during the day – we’ll stick with the sunshine rather than the Queenstown chills any day! These pleasantly warm and dry temperatures have given Northland the kiwi nickname as the ‘Winterless North’ – this is great news as it means you can visit any time of year to pop along for your horse ride!

If you are planning your trip to New Zealand in advance and wondering what the best time of year to visit is weather wise – we’ve compiled a little table for you below of our rides and how they change with the seasons – while we will ride in all weather conditions that are safe to do so we always recommend that you dress for the season (which more often than not means bring lots of sun-cream!)

Once you’ve decided on when you are visiting the next important challenge is trying to figure out what the weather will be like on the day so that you can make the most of your ride. In order to help you with this we’ve created a list of a few of our recommended forecasts that seem to be the most accurate more often than not. It’s worth noting, that our location is alongside the coast, and beside a large hill – so we are often fortunate that the weather will pass by over-head into Paihia and Russell which is great because if it is raining there it probably isn’t raining where we are – if you are unsure you can always give us a call!

Windy: This has to be one our of personal favorite forecasts that we find the the most accurate about the same days weather in the Bay of Islands. The great this about this that it will also give you information about wind speed and tidal flows as well which is great information to have for our ride the waves experience. They only words of caution we would give is that the weather in New Zealand is very changeable, especially in Northland as we are just a small split of land, so try to check the forecast in the morning or give us a call before your horse ride, just because it said rain a few days ago doesn’t mean it will be on the day!

The Weather Network: This is our old reliable guide. A forecast that more often than not seems to have the right idea about the weather so be sure to take a look at this one when you are planning your activities in the Bay of Islands.
